Health and Safety Advisor

About the role

The Health and Safety Advisor is part of the Health and Safety Team providing professional support to the Gwynedd Shipping, delivering and implementing policy across the company. The Health and Safety team promote a positive health and safety culture and support exemplary practices, promoting a culture of safety first and monitoring compliance.

Key responsibilities
Develop, review and implement health and safety policies, arrangements and health and safety guidance in line with current health and safety legislation ensuring that any changes are communicated to relevant parties and that new and/or updated documents are implemented throughout the University.
Provide professional, competent and timely advice.
Investigate accidents/ incidents in accordance with relevant health and safety legislation.
Advise and lead on health and safety training needs across the company.
Develop effective training programmes to meet these needs in conjunction with key stakeholders either by developing and delivering in-house training sessions and/or by sourcing external training providers.
Provide effective monitoring of health and safety performance including working with external health and safety auditors and undertaking in house audits, safety inspections and emergency drills to ensure legal compliance, best practice and continual improvement.
Maintain the Health and Safety portal in liaison with other members of the Health and Safety team and other key stakeholders where applicable.
Contribute to and develop health and safety communications including email, intranet, newsletters, updates and seminars.
Promote a positive health and safety culture throughout Gwynedd Shipping at all times. Establish, build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders. Attend and make a positive contribution to Unit health and safety meetings as and when required.
Any other duties as directed by the Head of Health and Safety.

Skills and experience

Essential:

NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or NVQ 4/NVQ 5 in Health and Safety.
IOSH Membership.
Extensive knowledge and understanding of Health & Safety Legislation.
Proven experience of carrying out risk assessments.
Experience of incident investigation
Experience within a Transport Organisation is required
Experience of practical policy development and implementation.
Experience of consulting with employees and representative bodies.
Experience of conducting safety inspections and audits.
Experience of advising people on Health & Safety Policies and Operational standards.
A good understanding of IT including Microsoft office packages.
Highly developed interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate with a diverse range of people.
Able to interpret health and safety information to a range of staff with a range of understanding in terms of health and safety matters.
Ability to work as an integral part of a team.
Ability to plan, organise and manage conflicting priorities, coping with varying demands and high levels of activity.
Ability to work flexibly, adapting to changes in priority to meet the needs of customers providing an effective service to the University.
Strong commitment to customer service and the delivery of a high standard of service and continuous improvement.
Ability to use skill and judgment in problem solving.
Ability to work independently without close supervision.
Excellent report writing skills.
Ability to maintain high levels of confidentiality at all times.
Willingness to travel to Gwynedd Shipping locations
Ability to deliver training.

Desirable

NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety.
NEBOSH National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management.
Experience of developing and delivering training and presenting.

Location for the Health and Safety Advisor role

As part of the role, you will be required to visit each of our sites; Holyhead, Shotton, Deeside and Newport. You will also be required to visit customer sites as/when required.

In return you will receive

Salary - £32,000.00 - £38,000.00 (Dependant on experience)

Annual Leave - 20 days annual leave increasing each year up to the maximum of 25 days plus Bank Holidays.
